Support
Write to support@obiplayer.com. A person reads every message; Obi is made by one developer, so an answer can take a few days.
What to tell us
- What you did, what you expected and what happened instead. A screenshot helps.
- Obi's version: Settings › About Obi.
- Your phone's model and Android version.
- Which server it is (Plex, Navidrome or another Subsonic server, Jellyfin) and its version.
- For a problem that comes and goes, the debug log (next section).
How to share the debug log
- Open Settings › Advanced and turn on Debug logging. It records more detail from then on.
- Make the problem happen again.
- Still in Settings › Advanced, tap Share debug logs and choose your email app (or any app you like). Send it to support@obiplayer.com.
- Turn Debug logging off again; it makes the log grow faster.
The log is a plain text file. It holds Obi's version, your Android version and phone model, the kinds of server you use, and a line for each thing Obi did, such as connecting, syncing, playing or failing, with the error's name. Obi keeps server addresses and names, passwords and tokens out of it, and cleans what it writes once more before it is shared. It refers to music by internal ids, not by song or album names. It goes only where you send it.
Fixes for common problems
Plex
"Sign in with Plex" opens a page, then nothing happens
Obi opens plex.tv in your browser and waits there for you to approve it. Sign in if Plex asks, then allow access; Obi carries on by itself. If you came back without approving, tap Open the Plex page again. If the code expired, start the sign-in again.
"No browser could open the Plex page"
Obi shows the plex.tv address instead. Open it on another device (a computer will do), approve Obi there, and the phone carries on by itself. Tap Copy to send the address to yourself.
"This Plex account has no servers yet"
Obi lists the servers that belong to the Plex account you signed in with, and the ones other people shared with it. Check that your Plex Media Server is signed in to that account (in Plex's web app, under Settings, the server should show in your list), and that the music library is shared with you if the server is a friend's.
"Can't reach (your server) from this network"
The server is off, asleep, or not reachable from where you are. At home, check that the phone is on the same network as the server. Away from home, the server needs Remote Access turned on in Plex's server settings, or Plex uses a slower relay. A VPN or a firewall on either side can block the connection. Obi tries every address Plex lists for the server and uses the best one that answers, so a server whose address changed is found again on its own.
"Sign in again" in a banner, or "(server) refused access"
Plex stopped accepting Obi's saved sign-in, for example after you revoked the device in your Plex account or changed your password. Tap Sign in in the banner and approve Obi again. Nothing is lost: your library, downloads and settings stay.
Navidrome and other Subsonic servers
"There's no Navidrome or Subsonic server at this address"
Type the whole address: https://music.example.com, or http://192.168.1.10:4533 for a
server on your network. Include the port if your server uses one (Navidrome's is 4533 by default) and the
folder if it lives under one (https://example.com/navidrome). Open the same address in your phone's
browser: it should show the server's own page.
"The server didn't accept this username and password"
Use the username and password of a user on the server. If a reverse proxy in front of the server asks for its
own login first, Obi can't use it: it sends the server's login, not the proxy's. Let the server's
/rest path through the proxy without its login.
"Can't make a secure connection: this device doesn't trust the server's certificate"
The server's HTTPS certificate comes from an authority your phone doesn't know, such as your own. Install that authority's certificate on the phone (Android's settings, Security, Encryption and credentials, Install a certificate, CA certificate); Obi trusts the certificates you install. A certificate from a public authority such as Let's Encrypt needs nothing.
"This address doesn't use HTTPS"
Obi allows plain http for servers on your own network and for an address you typed yourself, and
warns you: your password and your music then travel unencrypted. Use it only on a network you trust, or put the
server behind HTTPS or a VPN.
Jellyfin
"There's no Jellyfin server at this address"
Type the whole address, with https:// or http://, the port if there is one (Jellyfin's
is 8096 by default) and any folder. Open it in your phone's browser to check that Jellyfin's page shows.
Quick Connect
Quick Connect signs you in with a six-digit code instead of a password. Obi shows the code; enter it in another Jellyfin app you are signed in to, under Settings › Quick Connect. If Obi says "Quick Connect is turned off on this server", an administrator has to turn it on in Jellyfin's dashboard (under General), or you sign in with your password.
Using another user on the same server
Obi holds one user per Jellyfin server. Add the server again with the other user, from Settings › Add Jellyfin server: it replaces the first. Each phone signs in on its own.
Playback and the library
Music stutters or won't start on mobile data
In Settings › Playback you can cap the quality Obi asks for, separately on Wi-Fi and on mobile data (by default Original on Wi-Fi and 192 kbps on mobile data). A lower cap needs your server to convert the music, which a weak server or a slow upload can't always keep up with.
Playback stops when the screen is off
Some phones close apps in the background to save battery. In Android's settings, open Apps › Obi › Battery and allow background use (the setting is called Unrestricted or Don't optimise, depending on the phone).
New music is missing, or the library looks old
Open Settings, tap your server and choose Sync now to fetch what changed, or Resync library to fetch everything again and drop what the server no longer has. The first sync of a big library takes a while; it runs in the background with a notification and carries on where it stopped if it is interrupted.
Downloads wait or don't start
Downloads use Wi-Fi only by default. Change it under Settings › Downloads. They also need Android to let Obi run in the background (see the battery tip above).
A radio station shows no cover or no song
A station shows a song only if its stream or its web feed says what is playing. Covers come from the station, or from MusicBrainz and the Cover Art Archive when Look up covers online is on (Settings › Playback, under Internet radios).
Purchases
Restoring or refunding a purchase
Purchases are made and refunded through Google Play, and belong to your Google account. On a new phone or after reinstalling, sign in to the same Google account in Play and choose Restore purchase in Obi's settings, under Obi Pro. Refunds follow Google Play's rules: ask Google Play, or write to us and we will help.
Your data
How to remove what Obi keeps, and what leaves your device, is in the privacy policy.
